Our Story

How It All Started...

Westmark Church, nestled in the rural farmlands of Loomis, Nebraska, traces its origins back to 1880 when it was founded by Swedish immigrant and evangelist Fredrik Franson. Having moved to Nebraska with his devout family, Franson's early life was marked by a serious illness that led to a spiritual awakening. After recovering, he dedicated himself to preaching, evangelism, and church planting. Inspired and trained by D.L. Moody in Chicago, Franson adopted a fervent premillennial theology and passionately pursued evangelistic work, even becoming the first missionary sent out by Moody Church. His methods were emotional, bold, and sometimes controversial, often involving direct appeals for repentance in public gatherings. Despite criticism, many responded, and his commitment to the gospel began to leave a lasting impact.

Franson's work expanded globally as he founded the Scandinavian Alliance Mission (now TEAM) and partnered with influential Christian leaders like George Müller and Hudson Taylor. Known for his prayerful dependence on God and tireless energy, he trained and sent missionaries across the world, developed Bible courses, and influenced the formation of autonomous, missions-focused churches. Though his practices were sometimes criticized or even outlawed in state-church-dominated nations, his unyielding focus on prayer, evangelism, and Christ’s imminent return shaped a worldwide movement. His legacy endures through churches, mission agencies, and the Evangelical Free Church, which all stem from his singular vision and Spirit-empowered labor.

Today...

On a Sunday morning you will see people hugging, praying together, singing out, and giving faithfully to the mission of Westmark Church. throughout the week you will hear lots of kids, high school students, and a young adult community playing games and opening the Word of God together. You'll find seminars on leadership, compassion projects in the communities, and mission trips nationally and internationally. We have teams to organize missions, mens and women's ministries, children and care ministry, music, serving, and so many more things.
This vibrant church family didn't just happen over night. For over 144 years, we've been faithfully meeting together because Jesus has been doing something incredibly important in our hearts and community.
